When one page is right
If you have less than 10 years of relevant experience, you belong on one page. This covers:
- Students and recent graduates
- Early-career professionals (0-5 years)
- Mid-career professionals on a single track
- Career changers (the old career shouldn't eat space)
A one-page resume forces you to prioritize. It tells the recruiter "here's the strongest version of me" — not "here's everything I've ever done, you figure out what matters."
Recruiters across every major study spend 6-10 seconds on an initial scan. A tight one-page resume respects that. A cluttered two-pager makes them work to find the signal — and they won't.
When two pages are justified
Two pages are appropriate in a few specific situations:
- 10+ years of directly relevant experience. A senior engineering manager with eight roles over 15 years at top companies has too much to compress into one page without losing substance.
- Academic, research, or medical roles. CVs in these fields are expected to include publications, grants, presentations, and teaching history. Length is the norm.
- Senior leadership with genuinely distinct achievements across roles. Think VP-level and above with material business results at each stop.
Notice what's not on the list: "I just have a lot of jobs." Quantity of work history isn't what justifies length — relevance and depth do. Two pages of mediocre bullets is worse than one page of strong ones.
Why shorter is almost always better
Three reasons the short version usually wins:
Recruiter attention. They're scanning hundreds of resumes. A one-pager gets read in full. A two-pager often gets glanced at — page 2 especially.
ATS parsing. Applicant tracking systems handle shorter, cleaner documents more reliably. Long multi-page resumes with complex formatting are more likely to get parsed incorrectly or dropped into the wrong fields.
Signal-to-noise ratio. Every extra line dilutes your strongest points. A recruiter reading "Led cross-functional product launch that drove $8M revenue" is more impressed when it stands out than when it's buried between eight other bullets.
How to cut your resume to one page
Most resumes can be cut by 30-40% without losing anything important. Here's where to trim:
Remove old jobs. Anything more than 10-15 years ago is probably hurting, not helping. Either drop it entirely or compress it to a one-line entry: "Earlier roles: Operations Analyst at Acme Corp (2008-2011); Research Assistant at State University (2006-2008)."
Cut to 3-5 bullets per role. Pick the strongest ones. If you have a 7-bullet role from 2014, ask yourself which two you'd remove if forced. Then remove three.
Delete "References available upon request." Employers know they can ask. This line just takes space.
Remove irrelevant skills. If you're applying for a software engineering role, "Proficient in Microsoft Word" is taking up room better spent on things recruiters actually care about.
Trim your summary. Two or three sentences max. If it runs longer, the excess belongs in bullet points.
Cut hobbies and interests unless they're genuinely relevant (e.g., a competitive runner applying to a running-focused brand). Otherwise, they're filler.
Tighten verbose bullets. "Was responsible for managing a team of engineers working on…" becomes "Led team of 6 engineers building…"
Formatting tricks that save space without shrinking content
Before you cut content, check your formatting:
- Reduce margins to 0.5" on all sides (don't go tighter than that — it looks cramped).
- Use 10-11pt body font (never smaller than 10pt).
- Single-space bullets, with a small gap between sections.
- Remove section dividers and decorative lines — they take vertical space.
- Put contact info on one line, not stacked.
Small changes often recover half a page. Try formatting tweaks before you start cutting substance.
The real rule
The true test isn't "one page vs two" — it's every line earns its place. When every bullet either proves a skill, shows a result, or demonstrates something relevant to the job, length takes care of itself.
If you read your resume and any line makes you think "eh, whatever" — cut it. The recruiter will do the same, and they won't give you credit for it.
